Discussions focused on integrating customer insights, innovative initiatives, and Jira Product Discovery updates into planning to streamline processes with a stronger strategic focus. Key areas of focus included: 𝟭. 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: The teams explored using Investment Themes to set direction and prioritize projects while staying adaptable to change. 𝟮. Last Friday I hosted together with Sebastian Borggrewe and the Product Masterclass another roundtable for product managers. Latest session topics and learnings: "Instagrammification" of LinkedIn -> most content here is highly polished, nobody talks about the bad stuff here on LinkedIn even though we product managers love to talk about our "war stories" Quarterly product reviews -> be prepared and prepare all everyone! Nobody likes to be surprised in a big meeting. Talk to them and /or send them the topics and key points a week in advance so they know what's going to happen. In this note, try to describe everything in 3 sentences or less! Also time box the meeting itself so you don't waste your stakeholders' time. To make these reviews even better you need to align the goals and KPIs with Sales and Marketing to measure the right things! It wasn’t the usual conversation about stress; it dove deep into what burnout looks like when it’s lived, and how we, as a society, need to do better. Fabienne opened with a clear breakdown of burnout’s stages, but what hit hardest were Kazia's and 🥙Abdo’s personal stories. They didn’t just describe burnout—they showed us what it feels like. Kazia’s analogy stuck with me: “If your leg is broken, you rest and let it heal. But with mental health, we push through until we completely break.” It made me realize how different we treat mental pain from physical pain—often ignoring it until we’re too far gone. Abdo’s story mirrored this struggle. He was deeply frightened to be seen by his work as "a broken man" who is no longer capable of handling his previous responsibilities. "You are not a broken human if you suffer from mental health issues." But what was most relieving, especially as a people leader, was Fabienne’s candid explanation of who is truly responsible for addressing burnout in organizations. It’s not just on managers or team leaders, but the responsibility of those 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝗽. “The responsibility lies with the owners and shareholders because they are the ones making the key decisions. It’s their job to ensure that healthy systems are in place from day one—because healthy is sustainable, and ultimately more profitable. If the CEO doesn’t buy into it, or the shareholders don’t care, nothing will get realized that actually matters.” People leaders can do everything in their power to support their teams, but if the company’s structures and values don’t align with promoting employee well-being, change will never take root. Fabienne also pointed out that companies often treat people like machines, planning workloads as if humans can perform at 100% every day. “We are cyclical creatures,” she said. Some days we perform at our peak, and other days we need rest—it’s simply part of being human. Yet, organizations often don’t account for this natural rhythm. Budgets and capacity plans are created with the assumption that people won’t get sick or need breaks. It’s this kind of thinking that drives burnout. Julia’s moderation let the conversation breathe, creating space for the raw emotions in the room. We didn’t just talk about burnout as a concept—we felt it, and that built a deep sense of empathy. Oliver S.’s BE LIGHT Now GmbH mediation app demo was brilliant, but what touched me most was seeing him later at the train station, quietly handing out leftover food to the homeless. No big announcements—just kindness in action. It was a reminder that compassion should always have a place in our busy lives. #MentalHealth

Last month, I had the pleasure of speaking at BED-Con (BED-Con - Berlin Expert Days e.V.) 🎤. In my lightning talk, "Engineering Metrics - More Problems, Less Solutions", one of my key points was that metrics should never be incentivized 🚫📊. Fast forward to this week, and I’ve realized this isn’t just an engineering problem - and no, I didn’t make this up: Over the weekend, I rented a car 🚗 for a family trip. The salesperson gave me a great deal and asked if I’d be willing to receive a survey on the service. Today, I got a strange follow-up call 📞 (which I don’t usually get). They asked if I was satisfied with the service and confirmed my deposit was refunded. Then, without me asking, they kindly "reminded" me that a survey was on its way 📬 - and requested that I rate them as "exceptional" because it affects the salesperson’s career 📈🤯. While I don’t know all the details, this raised some questions that I think some managers should be asking themselves: 1️⃣ Are the survey results meaningful if customers are approached like this? 2️⃣ Is spending time and phone minutes in this way the best use of company resources? 3️⃣ Did I get this great deal because of good service, or just to ensure a high survey rating? Incentivizing metrics leads to some strange and unintended consequences—not just in engineering but everywhere 🚨.

What happens when two precision and planning developers join forces to start a company? Both Andreas Sauer and I are all about detailed planning. We carefully map out: 👉 Resources 👉 Timelines 👉 Money 👉 Processes This is awesome.  Our clients, freelancers and partners love us for this. BUT. We've learned there should be at least some room for flexibility. An example: Initially, we'd get caught up in planning the minute we got a new lead, focusing more on potential issues than on the opportunities themselves. This often led to stress instead of excitement. Now, we've adjusted our approach. When a new opportunity comes along, we see it for what it is: An opportunity. We go for it and combine it with our precise planning. Do you see yourself in this? How do you manage to balance planning and flexibility?

Ok, please let me summarize the current state of A.I. from my technical view for anyone here in my timeline: I have integrated ChatGPT for 2 blue chip German companies in the support chain and for one medium size Gorilla in the development and deployment chain in the past 12 months. It gave me a very good living in the past year - so much for "it is taking my job"... no, it has raised my income by ca. 25%. A.I. is doing a good job at improving efficiency by an estimated 10% to 20% in the typical "generative" steps (writing text, checking code, retrieving internal know-how, aka RAG). It is a solid tool. It is also an improper tool for many things, people use it for. It can help to improve images or generate some kind of images perfectly. 50-60% increase of productivity in niches. It can write some basic "royalty free" songs for you, money saved. I am all in all amazed by 3 or 4 generative models out there and also amazed, how badly many of the biggies fail to copy OpenAI. AIstudio by Google is not good. I am not sure, where we are heading at the moment, but my life as a developer and strategist consultant improved with A.I. - not beyond belief, but by a measurable amount. Interesting times, Watson!

Why your freelance clients ignore your connection requests. (Spoiler: It's not your charming personality) One of my mentees is… A software architect from North Germany. His goal? More clients on LinkedIn. He sent connection requests to CTOs and… Spent 2 hours customizing 10 messages a day. But… After two weeks… Only 4% of CTOs accepted. He felt discouraged and frustrated. At this rate, he'd get his next client by 2075. This is very common for software engineers starting on LinkedIn. 👉 His messages provided reasons for CTOs to reject him. 👈 He overwhelmed them with his charming career story. Here’s the fix: Don’t send a connection request message. 2 weeks later, his acceptance rate is steadily increasing towards 60%. He’s now happier and more productive. Who needs a charming personality when you've got a killer headline? Let your skills do the talking.
